A receipt is not an invoice

The invoice says what the customer owes. The receipt says what they paid: how much, when, by what, against which invoice, and what's left. That's why this one fits on a page, with one line naming the jobs it paid for and no line table. A customer who paid a deposit and then the balance gets two receipts and one invoice, and the balance on each receipt tells them where they stand.

What the law says about receipts

Not much, and we won't pretend otherwise. The repair rules we've read are about the estimate, the authorization and the invoice. Apart from card surcharges, the one rule we've read that names the receipt is Quebec's: it goes out in French, with English under it only when the customer reads English. Your invoice is where the statutory blocks go, and the invoice generator prints them.

If you add a card surcharge, say so on the form. Colorado has its own notice for the receipt and the invoice (C.R.S. §5-2-212), and it prints in the statute's words.

How to fill it in

The receipt takes its balance from the job. If you started from the invoice, the job and its total are already here. Leave the amount blank to take the whole balance, or type a part payment and the sheet shows what's still owed. Add any earlier payments, such as a deposit, and they come off the balance. Choose how it was paid; for a check or a card, the number or the last four digits go on the sheet as well.

Every figure comes from the same money module the rest of Wrenchy uses, so the receipt, the invoice and the balance agree to the cent. Press Print, then choose your printer or Save as PDF. It prints on US Letter.

What each state and province asks for on a receipt

Each line has its section and the day it was read. It's a reading of the rules, not legal advice. Where a region has nothing specific to the receipt, the list says so, and you can follow its link to the full rules.
