When your state wants it in writing

An estimate is the page you pull out when the final bill gets questioned, and the rule behind it changes at the state line. Above $150 in Florida, the customer checks one of three choices in capital letters and signs it. Michigan has a smaller threshold and a different notice. Ontario has no threshold at all.

RegionWritten estimateWhat prints on it
MichiganFrom $50; under that only if asked (MCL 257.1332)The replaced-parts notice in capitals (MCL 257.1333(2))
CaliforniaBefore any work, no dollar threshold (B&P §9884.9)The third-party-payor statement when an insurer is paying (16 CCR §3353(d))
FloridaWhen the work will pass $150 (Fla. Stat. §559.905)The choices block and, with a supplies charge, the supplies statement
New YorkOn request, no dollar threshold (15 NYCRR §82.5)The right to the replaced parts
OntarioBefore any charge, no dollar threshold (O. Reg. 17/05)The ten-per-cent sentence, French and English when the customer reads French
QuebecOver $100, before the repair (LPC art. 168)French first, with the English under it, and the date the estimate stops holding

What changes when you pick your region

The estimate above redraws as you choose. Statute text prints in the statute's words, and nothing of ours goes on the paper: the citation and the day we read it show under each block on screen, beside the note that this isn't legal advice. The list above the sheet shows what that region asks for on an estimate and marks each item filled or missing.

The words for a part change too. Michigan's list says "new, used, rebuilt, or reconditioned", and New York's says "new, after market equipment manufacturer". Pick the class on the part and the sheet prints that region's word.

After the customer says yes

What you type stays in this browser and follows you across the four documents. Open the repair order and the job is already on it, then the invoice when the work is done and the receipt when it's paid. Press Print, then choose your printer or Save as PDF; it comes out on US Letter paper with the page numbers at the foot.

What each state and province asks for on an estimate

Each line has its section and the day it was read. It's a reading of the rules, not legal advice, so check anything that matters with your own lawyer. A region without a rules page yet prints the national minimum in the generator above.
