Technician productivity
Hours billed divided by the hours the technician was available, usually the hours paid. Where efficiency asks how fast the jobs went, productivity asks how much of the technician's day turned into billed hours at all.
Technician productivity = hours billed ÷ hours available (times 100 for a percentage)
That is the shop owners' formula. In a 2014 AutoShopOwner thread on tracking billed against worked hours, bstewart wrote "Tech productivity = Hours billed / Hours available", and separated it from efficiency, which is billed hours over the hours actually spent on the jobs. AutoLeap's labor-rate page, read November 4, 2026, defines productivity the same way, as hours sold "divided by hours on the clock". Fullbay's 2022 post frames productivity as volume and efficiency as speed and writes both with the same two inputs, so the word is not used identically everywhere; this entry follows the owners' version.
The hours available come from the time clock; the hours billed are the flagged hours. The gap between productivity and efficiency is everything that was not a job: waiting for parts, waiting for an approval, cleaning, a car that was not ready.
Hours on jobs ÷ hours available = productivity ÷ efficiency
Productivity divided by efficiency gives the hours on jobs over the hours available, so a technician at 0.88 productivity and 1.10 efficiency was on a job for 0.80 of a paid day, and that 0.20 is the shop's problem to find, not the technician's. As an example only: 40 hours available, 35.2 billed, 32 on jobs. The same thread says as much: bstewart pays technicians on efficiency and advisors and managers on productivity, because the second depends on the counter and the layout as much as on the bay.
In Wrenchy the job clock runs on the line and the time clock on the day, so both ratios come from recorded time rather than an estimate of it.
