Repair facility registration
In Michigan, the annual registration of each place of business that repairs motor vehicles for compensation, under the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Act. The number it produces must appear on every form, estimate, invoice, warranty and waiver the facility gives a customer.
Michigan registers the place, and the place's number follows the paper. A person may not operate a repair facility "unless the person registers the facility" (MCL 257.1306). The form asks for the ownership, "the location of its established place of business", the officers and owners, a description of the services and the size of the facility, and copies of the documents given to customers (MCL 257.1314(1)). A Michigan registration form asks for copies of the documents the facility gives its customers, so the estimate and invoice layouts are filed with the state before the first customer sees them.
Once issued, the number goes on every copy of every form, contract, estimate, diagnosis, repair document, invoice, warranty and waiver a customer receives (MCL 257.1332). A second place of business is a second registration with its own number on its own documents.
The 2025 amendment, effective February 1, 2026, added one exception: an owner may be approved for one auxiliary facility within a 3-mile radius under the same registration number, provided it mirrors the registered facility's hours, vehicle types and repairs and every in-person customer dealing happens at the registered place of business (MCL 257.1314(2), (3)). The second location in Michigan post has the section in full.
California's equivalent is the automotive repair dealer registration. In Wrenchy each shop's registration number is a field on the shop that prints where the state's rule puts it, and a group's shops each carry their own; the multi-location page covers the group.
