Mobile automotive repair

In California's regulations, the repair of motor vehicles by an automotive technician who, with the tools and equipment necessary, travels to the customer's location to perform the repair. The mobile article applies to a dealer that does this and has no registered place of business within 50 miles of where the work is done.

The definition was rewritten in the Bureau of Automotive Repair's 2025 order, effective October 1, 2025. Mobile automotive repair is now repair "performed by an automotive technician" who, "along with the tools and equipment necessary", "travels to the customer's location to perform the repair" (16 CCR § 3351.7.2(a)). The scope section says who the mobile article binds: dealers that engage in mobile repair "and do not operate a currently registered place of business within a geographical radius of 50 miles" of where the work is done (§ 3351.7.1(a)).

A shop with a registered bay that sends a van out within 50 miles is a shop under California's general rules; only the business that is vans and nothing else falls under the mobile article.

For that business the article adds, under § 3351.7.3: a registration number per van; the firm name and number on the van in 72-point type; every customer handed the official dealer's sign with the work order; and, since the 2025 order, the street address where the repairs were done on the final invoice, or a description such as the nearest cross-street or a mile-marker when there is none. The mobile mechanic registration post has the section in full.

In Wrenchy the service address is a field on the repair order and the appointment, and the van is a stock location and a bay of its own. The mobile mechanics page covers the rest of the day; automotive repair dealer covers the registration itself.
